Virtual Workshop #2: Digital Art 2D & 3D

Dr. Tia is bringing digital art to new dimensions in this new virtual workshop! Spend 6 weeks learning how to take 2D computer images to a three dimensional reality. Discuss X-Y-Z access and build skills needed to design for a 3D printer.

  • Lesson One
Discuss X-Y plane as the field of work for 2D art platform. Discuss shapes that you would find in a simple plane. Create a mosaic on paint to familiarize with tools and provide a visual to X-Y plane concept.
  • Lesson Two
Intro to using paint and techniques found in 2D digital art. Discuss art terms like symmetry; what makes something symmetrical? Does it have to be the same color and shape or just one of the two? Explain that 2D artists must use a technique known as shading to make something appear to be 3D. Allow for time to use paint software to experiment with these techniques.
  • Lesson Three
Students will think about animals in Florida. Focus on features of the animals; what shapes do they see? Is there symmetry? Students will choose an animal to digitally create and use remaining class time to begin drawing a 2D version of what they will later turn into a 3D animal. Encourage kids to work at home until they are satisfied with their artwork.
  • Lesson Four
Discuss X-Y-Z plane as a field of work for 3D art platform. Discuss how the shapes in 2D transform into new shapes in 3D. Using TinkerCad create a new 3D shape mosaic as a means of familiarizing themselves with this new point of view.
  • Lesson Five
Let’s go in-depth with the different features of designing in 3D. Create holes, build upwards, and use sizing tools. Allow time for students to use the software and ask questions.
  • Lesson Six
Students will look back at their 2D animal art and use their new knowledge to create a 3D version in TinkerCad. Encourage them to take as much time as needed and to work on their own until they are satisfied.

How do Virtual Workshops work?

Virtual Workshops are offered in two cohorts. There is a Wednesday group and a Saturday group. You pick the day that works for you. The same lesson from Wednesday is repeated on Saturday so there is no need to sign up for both days.

Cohorts are kept small with no more than 4 in each group.

Each week is a new lesson with time to review the language from the week before.

Each lesson is $12.50 with 20% off for members. The total 6-week workshop is $75.

After you register, your teacher will follow up with an email including a private Zoom link and instructions on how to log in the first day of lessons.
